American gymnast Aly Raisman added to the US medal total at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London on Tuesday, while China widened its lead in the overall medal count. Here’s a recap of the day’s events:

Aly Raisman of the US won two medals in the individual events of the women’s gymnastics competition. Raisman captured a gold medal in the floor exercise hours after she won bronze in the balance beam courtesy of a successful US protest to recalculate the event’s final scores. American Gabby Douglas, the all-around gold medalist, had another difficult day, finishing seventh on the balance beam.

In the women’s track and field events, Australia’s Sally Pearson won the gold medal in the women’s 100-meter hurdles in an Olympic-record time of 12.35 seconds, while Dawn Harper of the US earned the silver and American Kellie Wells captured the bronze. US favorite Lolo Jones finished fourth.

On the men’s side, American runner Leonel Manzano won the silver medal in the 1500-meters, finishing behind Algeria’s Taoufik Makhloufi and ahead of Abdalaati Iguider of Morocco. Russia’s Ivan Ukhov cleared 2.33 meters to win the gold medal in the high jump, finishing ahead of American Erik Kynard and Derek Drouin of Canada. Chinese hurdler Liu Xiang, a favorite in the men’s 110-meter hurdles, suffered an Achilles injury while crashing the first hurdle of his preliminary heat. In a show of perseverance, Xiang hopped down the track until he was helped across the finish line by Hungary’s Balazs Baji and other hurdlers.

Elsewhere, American cyclist Sarah Hammer took the silver medal in the women’s omnium event, finishing behind gold medalist Laura Trott of Britain.

In other results, the women’s beach volleyball final will be an all-US affair between two-time gold medalists Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh-Jennings, and upstarts April Ross and Jennifer Kessy, who upset the top-ranked Brazilian team, 2-1 (15-21, 21-19, 15-12), in Tuesday’s semifinals.

The US women’s basketball team beat Canada, 91-48, to extend their Olympic winning streak to 39 and reach Thursday’s semifinal round where they’ll face Australia, a 75-60 winner over China. France and Russia will meet in the other semifinal contest. The top-ranked US women’s volleyball team swept the Dominican Republic to advance to Thursday’s semifinals against South Korea. Brazil faces Japan in the other semifinal match. Five British fighters advanced to the semifinal rounds of the men’s boxing competition, while no American male boxer will medal in any weight class for the first time in the Olympic history of the sport.
