‘Deadpool’ Gets a Producers Guild Nomination, and Now We’re Worried About the Oscars

La La Land, duh. Manchester By the Sea, right. Moonlight, you better. Deadpool – excuse me? It’s true, Ryan Reynolds’ superhero movie has just been named one of the 10 best films of 2016 by the Producers Guild of America (via Variety). Many of us thought its Golden Globes nominations were just a result of the HFPA’s always wacky taste, but it seems the Deadpool virus has spread across the nation to multiple voting bodies, from the Writer’s Guild of America to the Producers.

The 20th Century Fox film was the most surprising title on the PGA list. The other nine selections included awards season regulars like the above the Oscar Best Picture frontrunners plus Arrival, Fences, Hell or High Water, Hacksaw RidgeHidden Figures, and Lion. Now you might be thinking of Deadpool‘s inclusion, “Ok so what? Who cares about the PGAs?” But anyone who cares about the Oscars race cares about the PGAs. The Academy’s Best Picture nominees have overlapped with anywhere from seven to nine of the PGA’s selections in the past seven years. And the Producer’s Guild has predicted the Oscars top prize 19 times over the last 27 years. So that means Deadpool actually has a shot at getting a Best Picture nomination. Let that sink in.

But since the PGAs often recognize a couple of titles left off the Academy’s final nominees, that also might not happen. The other dismaying news from the PGA announcement is the likelihood that Jackie might get shut out of the Oscar race. Instead, Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge has charged ahead in the Oscar race. But hey, I believe in movie miracles so maybe, just maybe the Academy will give the Pablo Larrain film some love beyond a Best Actress nod. Jeff Nichols‘ Loving has also quickly fallen out of the race alongside Martin Scorsese’s Silence, which failed to earn a single Golden Globe or BAFTA nomination. Ten days in, and 2017 is already a cruel, cruel year, in real life, and for the movies.

In the animated category the PGA nominated Finding Dory, Kubo and the Two Strings, Moana, The Secret Life of Pets, and Zootopia. The winners will be announced on January 28.
