So my wife and I decided to buy a house out in the country -- a place where a deer may walk through our yard and where squirrels roam free. What could we leave them to nibble on since we're looking to make new friends with our neighbors, of all species. Here are some foods your new pet squirrel will love.

Breads
From the article "What Will Squirrels Eat?" They'll enjoy your left over white breads along with Rye and Pumpernickel.

Fruits and Vegetables
Your new backyard pet is a herbivore who love fruits and vegetables like peas, watermelon, grapes, apples, tomatoes, corn, yellow squash and broccoli.

Nuts
Except for peanuts because, the toxic mold inside the peanut shell can be harmful. Otherwise, nuts are actually good squirrel nutrition. Leave out in the yard your unwanted hazelnuts, acorns, walnuts, hickory nuts, beech nuts and butternuts.

So enjoy your new neighbors and don't be distressed if you don't get to see them enjoy their treats. Squirrels tend to take what they can grab and run with it.
