My father currently suffers with dementia and now it's time for my brother and I to give him direction. Still, the father-isms and words of wisdom he instilled in me over the years help me realize today that he was preparing us kids for almost anything that would come our way.

Are their things your father told you that are forever burned into your brain? I've got five that I'd like to share with you in honor of Father's Day.

5) Hard work does pay off.
Dad said, “you’ve got to work and pay, then you can go outside and play.” He also told me, “I don’t care what you do in life, just be the best at it that you can be.” Well, that's what I'm doing dad.

4) You’ll catch more flies with honey than vinegar.
Dad taught me that I’ll most likely to get the girl, get the job, and make a new friends by being nice rather than being a jerk. Dad taught me to be kind and help others when I can, and that's something I try to instill in my sons today.

3) If you can count your good friends on one hand, you’re doing good.
To this day I remain close friends with some people I’ve know for 30 to 40 years. But only with a few.  With my radio career, and  being in the public eye, I've become 'somewhat' friends with thousands of people. Dad’s words of wisdom here, are so true.

2) If You'd focus as much on improving the system as you do trying to screw it over, you’d be a millionaire!
When I was young, I was always trying to find the cheap way out, but as I grew older I realized that, the cheap comes out expensive. Follow the rules!

1) Life is short, make every day count.
When your a teenager, you’re invincible. You feel like you’re going to live forever. Now, I’m seeing friends my age pass away. My father once said, “The older you get, the closer to God you become.” And because of dad took us to church on Sunday's when we were young, I'm still going today. Great job dad!

I hope these lessons learned from my dad, may help you someday. Soon, he won’t remember who I am, but I’ll never forget the life lessons he taught me.
