We've all been there before.  You want to celebrate the 4th of July and enjoy some fireworks, but your dog absolutely freaks out.  How can you keep them comfortable?

According to Cesar Millan, one of the most popular dog trainers in the world, more dogs run away on the 4th of July than any other day.  So how do we keep them safe?

I used to have a dog named Tucker who was incredibly loyal.  He almost never left my side.  If I was around, he was near me.  The only time I ever had to worry about him was on the 4th of July.  It was the only holiday where he ever ran away from me and wouldn't come back.  We were way out in the country in East Otto blowing off fireworks in the back yard and he disappeared into the woods to avoid the noise.  He refused to come back out until it was over.

So how do we keep them safe and still enjoy the festivities?

Cesar Millan suggests taking these steps:

1.  Prepare for the noise - The best way to keep them comfortable is to avoid the noise altogether.  If you can, find a home away from where the fireworks will be going off.  Have a sleepover at the other house and just remove them if you can.

2.  Accomodate them - If you can't move them away, make sure they have a safe place in your house for them to go.  And be sure to have someone there to keep them comfortable.

3.  Acclimate them - get them used to the sound by playing sounds of recorded fireworks at increasing volume the days leading up to the event.

4.  Sedation - Be sure to talk to your vet before giving your pet any medication, and remember that timing is important.

5.  Communicate with them - Remember that your dogs communicate with energy, not with words.   So if you don't make a big deal out of the fireworks, they might be a little easier with them too.
