As you are on the move in the morning and heading home in the afternoon, be extra careful! Deer will be on the move as well. According to the New York State Department of Transportation nearly 65,000 vehicle-deer (and vehicle-moose collisions in some areas of the state) accidents happen every year...MOST between October and December.

Archery season for deer opens Monday, October 1 and runs through November 16. As hunters hit the fields and woods they'll be moving the deer...perhaps right in to the path of your car. If I can save you from an accident, injury or worse, then writing this post was well worth it.

Also a reminder, if you or someone in your family is a hunter remind them they need to report their "harvest" by contacting the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The number is 1-866-426-3778 or www.dec.ny.gov

Just remember, "Deer Crossing" signs are great reminding us that a certain area of highway has a higher reported number of deer sightings, but deer can cross roads anywhere. On a lighter note, I recall my town USED to have a deer crossing sign in front of our home. I demanded that they remove it. I told them I didn't want the deer crossing there! (LOL, sorry...couldn't resist)
