Hot Toys’ Batman is a Faithful Recreation of a Very Glum Chum [Review]
I did not particularly care for Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. As a film I found it rather lacking, but there were elements that I would agree had some merit. Wonder Woman was cool, the fight choreography was solid, and some of the practical design work was very sharp. One element that I just never got on board with however was the new Bat-suit. I know it was more authentic to the version on the printed page, and wasn't quite as bulk or overly realistic like previous Bat-suits, but it just didn't work for me. It looked like it was cobbled together from duct tape and not befitting a superhero.
With that in mind, it's still possible to appreciate the work that went into creating Batman's new look. That's just as true for the on-screen version as it is the miniaturized action figure versions that have been circulating since the film's release. This month, Hot Toys takes its pass at the Batfleck, and even though I'm still not sold on this particular design, it's arguably the most authentic version of Batman you'll get without stealing one of Ben Affleck's suits.
‘Civil War’ Spider-Man Gets His First Figure This Summer in Marvel Legends 3-Pack
If you somehow have been living on a derelict space station that only just crashed back down on Earth and you missed out on the months of hype for Captain America: Civil War, I guess it's a little late for a Spider-Man spoiler warning. To be fair, even Marvel couldn't help but spill the beans on the webhead's arrival in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by showing him off in trailers and images well before the film hit theaters. Oddly though, while there is plenty of Captain America and Iron Man merchandise to be found from the new film, there's nary a Spider-Man figure to be seen. That changes this summer.
Captain America and Falcon Mix It Up With Iron Man and War Machine in Hot Toys’ New Artist Mix Series
Hey it's another comic book movie and that means it's time for even more Artist Mix figures from Hot Toys. The offshoot line kicked off last year with Avengers: Age of Ultron, and has since covered Batman V Superman, but now it's come full circle back to Marvel again with Captain America: Civil War. Of course, that means it's time for another Iron Man and Captain America figure because those are the two guys who do the thing in the movie. Fortunately, there's also going to be a Falcon and a War Machine to balance the scales juuuuuuust a bit. Not too much though. Don't want to take too much of the spotlight away from Iron Man and Cap.
The Bad Guys Come Out to Play in New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan Trailer
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are finally getting the 3D action game they deserve, and they couldn't have asked for better company. Platinum Games has a strong catalog of excellent action games, with a few not-so-great ones sprinkled in, to be fair. Still, even in those that don't quite qualify as memorable for the right reasons, the actual action was almost always still remarkable. After the success of Transformers Devastation, Platinum again turned its eye to another '80s cartoon, albeit this time with a benefit of a modern comic backing it all up.
Based in the IDW universe of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Platinum's game will let players take on the roles of all four Turtles in co-op brawler that looks to add another notch in the developer's "Good" column. Where the first trailer was a bit of a broad overview of what to expect from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, this latest video (exclusively revealed on IGN) gives us a better look at the bosses from the Foot Clan and Dimension X that will put our heroes to the test.
Barbie’s Superman is the Man of Blue Steel
Today, Mattel finally unveiled the final member of its Barbie-fied DC Trinity. Now Superman can partner up with Batman and Wonder Woman for all kinds of outrageous fashion adventures. Will Darkseid's attack close down the mall and prevent Clark from buying a new flannel shirt? Will Batman finally muster up enough courage to ask Wonder Woman to the Spring Fling? Can the T-birds finally take the Scorpions out on Thunder Road?
For a mass-market figure, the Henry Cavill Ken doll head isn't all that bad. It's got those piercing blue eyes; the thick, expressive eyebrows; the cleft chin and strong jawline; it even looks as if he's silently judging you for having your doubts about the DC Cinematic Universe. Or maybe he's just giving you stone cold Blue Steel right in the kisser.
Look out Zoolander, Kal-el is coming for you.
Does Your Wallet Bleed? It Will For This Hot Toys Armored Batman
"Do you bleed?" It's easily one of the more ridiculous things Batman has ever said in print or on film. Especially when you throw on that weird robot voice filter that Batfleck is using to disguise his identity. Still, as convoluted as Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice looks, and weird as some of the decisions on the direction on the film have been, there are some things BvS appears to be getting right. Though the main batsuit looks like a duct tape and Ace bandage nightmare, the armored suit Batman dons to take on the Man of Steel looks rather impressive and pays proper tribute to The Dark Knight Returns. Its transition to toys has been better than the standard suit, too, as this new Hot Toys figure can attest.
The regular Batman figure from Hot Toys BvS line looks like someone stuffed Ben Affleck into a few garbage bags, then filled out the extra space with sweatsocks. He looked lumpy and not at all like an actual human being. Here, that problem is alleviated by the form-fitting armor. You don't have to worry about the fabric suit, and the machined pieces bring a refined genius to the look. Batman's been around the block. He saw things when he still wore the traditional outfit of his youth, and this armored get up isn't just a deterrent against Superman, it's the only way the aging normie can stand toe-to-toe with an adversary that isn't in his 50s. All the while, the suit is wholly in line with Batman's aesthetic, and won't be mistaken for some other hero's style.
It’s Getting Hoth in Here: Star Wars Battlefront’s Upcoming Updates Promise New Maps, Modes, Characters and More
Since its launch in November, millions of battles have been waged for galactic supremacy in Star Wars Battlefront. Through all that time, DICE has kept its plans for expansion relatively under wraps, save for the free Battle for Jakku update released during Star Wars: The Force Awakens' launch. Now that the dust has settled a bit, the developer's finally pulling back the curtain on the add-ons planned for the space shooter, and it looks like fans of the classic trilogy will have plenty to look forward to throughout 2016.
New maps and modes are great and all, but it's really all about the extra hero characters and the clothes they wear. Most importantly, DICE is releasing a free update this week that will add Hoth costumes for Luke and Han when they're present on the icy planet's maps. Luke and his busted up face are nice and all, but I'm more excited to see how DICE plans to handle the great brown/blue debate fans of Han Solo in Empire Strikes Back have waged for decades. Well, so long as they haven't seen the irrefutable proof in the behind the scenes documentaries on the Blu-ray collection.
