To address an overpopulation issue, Binghamton University has set up a controlled hunt to kill 50 deer on land surrounding the campus.

The university announced the pilot program -- a controlled bowhunt -- is endorsed by Committee on the University Environment, and began today, according to WGRZ.

The Binghamton University Nature Preserve will be closed from 5 a.m. until noon, from now until Tuesday.

WGRZ reports, "Bowhunters submitted applications to the New York State University at Binghamton Police chief and were interviewed before being selected for the program. University police will cordon off entrances and exits of the Nature Preserve during the hunt to stop anyone from entering the area."

The campus is already closed to students, as the fall semester ended last week.
