In an apparent April Fools' joke, Houghton College announced plans to build a bio-dome over its main campus on Tuesday.

The college PR department put out a press release saying an anonymous donor is giving $60 million to complete an $84 million bio-dome. The press release said, “The idea for the bio-dome came from an aircraft hangar at an old Soviet military airbase near Berlin in Krausnick, Germany that was converted into a tropical resort of about 194 million cubic feet.”

Rob Pool, vice president for student life, says after hearing about the idea, the college began researching and learned of a company developing ‘breakthrough material called LPP.’

The press release claims the bio-dome will be “made with 100 percent space-age ultra-light transparent/translucent material that will make the skeleton structure virtually unseen, allowing for an unobstructed view of the sky.”

The college says its bio-dome will keep temperatures an average of 74 degrees and that it will never rain inside because only moisture in the form of gas will be able to get through the material. Now if we can just turn this prank into reality and cover Buffalo in the winter time!
