The story is unfolding right now...

Just one day after meeting with Pope Francis, and sitting directly behind him at the U.S. Capital, Speaker John Boehner has informed members of Congress that he is resigning as Speaker of the House and leaving his seat at the end of October.

An aide for Boehner stated that John believes that putting members of Congress through extensive leadership turmoil would only lead to a great deal of damage to the institution, but he is proud of what has been accomplished so far.

John Boehner has also been in the political spotlight for failing to fight President Obama's administration on issues that are important to the GOP.

John Boehner was first elected to Congress in 1990, became Speaker of the House in 2011, and will officially resign on October 30th.
