The next time you get into an auto accident, just remember you’re lucky it happened here. Really. [more]

Buffalo is one of the 10 safest driving cities in America, according to a new government report [exact ranking uncertain: we’ll explain in a minute].

The study, done by the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, looked at death rates from auto accidents. The CDC notes that auto fatality rates have gone down in recent years, but car crashes are still a major cause of death in the U.S. More than 34,000 people died in 2009, the last year that full statistics were available.

The CDC report says the 10 most dangerous American cities to drive in are:

  1. Orlando, FL
  2. Memphis, TN
  3. Glendale, TN
  4. Miami, FL
  5. Las Vegas, NV
  6. Birmingham, AL
  7. Sacramento, CA
  8. Tampa, FL
  9. San Antonio, TX
  10. Jacksonville, FL

Now, here’s why we can’t give you Buffalo’s exact ranking among safe driving cities; the CDC report said the differences between the 10 safest cities was insignificant. So we, like the report, will list them alphabetically:

  • Boston, MA
  • Buffalo, NY
  • Cleveland, OH
  • Hartford, CN
  • Newark, NJ
  • Plano, TX
  • Providence, RI
  • Salt Lake City, UT
  • Santa Ana, CA
  • St. Paul, MN

So why is it so safe to drive here? I’m thinking short travel times and well-trained medical staffs. Why do you think it’s a safer drive? Tell us, here or on our Facebook page.
