Can Drinking Beer Make You ‘Brighter’?

Anna Gontarek-Janicka

They say that alcohol may kill brain cells and I am not here to debate that. However, a new recent study supports that having one alcoholic drink may help to increase the mind’s creativity function. According to WUTR and reported on WIVB: Researchers at the University of Graz in Austria have released findings from a study that say mild alcohol intoxication helps lead to mental clarity and to spark creative thought. The study’s lead author Dr. Mathias Benedek says:

“While many activities usually benefit from high cognitive control, some may actually suffer from too much focus,  Alcohol may reduce fixation effects by loosening the focus of attention. Thereby, alcohol may facilitate a broader associative search and the effective solving of creative tasks that are prone to fixation effects.”

It should also be noted the although creativity appeared to be enhanced by drinking a pint, the researchers did note consuming more than that may affect creativity negatively. Everything in moderation I suppose.

So there you have it. If you want to get creative quick and can do it responsibly?

Just remember the A-B-C’s. ‘ABit of Booze- Consumed for Creativity’.
