With the resurgence of Buffalo's waterfront, a piece of history will find a new home at Canalside.

A $600,000 state grant will be used to fully restore a 1924 menagerie carousel that was made in North Tonawanda, and has spent the past 61 years in storage.

Assemblyman Sean Ryan, who made this all possible, said that the master plan laid out a vision for Canalside that included both the children’s museum and a carousel, and with this funding we will be able to bring the restored carousel to Canalside.

The wooden carousel will be solar-powered with 31 animals to ride, including horses, a lion, tiger, ostrich and giraffe.

Sean Ryan and city leaders agreed to keep the cost down, and will charge only $1.00 to ride the carousel.

The restored carousel is expected to make an appearance at Canalside in 2017.
