There's just no gentle way to tell you this: network television is planning not one, but two celebrity diving competition shows in the next year or so! Almost makes me wish the Mayans were right...

Don't get me wrong. I'm always happy to see celebrities look foolish [or worse] trying to sing, or dance, or get through a boot camp-like training session [to be fair, I'm usually pleasantly surprised when they can meet the challenge]. It's just..well, diving?

See. here's the thing: celebrities, especially actors and actressess, may find themselves in a situation where they're called on to sing or dance. But the last time anybody made a fuss over diving in a movie was well before any of us were born. The 1940's was the Golden Age of Diving (and Swimming) movies. The biggest star was a talented swimmer named Esther Williams. Here's a few shots of her in action:

Are we looking at a new era of aquatic cinema? Probably not. But Fox (Stars In Danger: High Diving) and ABC (Celebrity Splash) think you'll tune in at home. Will you?

If you would like to elaborate, there's room here, or on our Facebook page...
