Some laws may just be a little too tough. An Indiana couple may be facing jail time for rescuing and raising a baby deer that they found in a canal.

Jennifer and Jeff Counceller were faced with the decision to let nature take it’s course or rescue bambi. There were wounds on the baby deer’s backside, she wouldn’t stand up so when the pulled her to safety they decided to bring her home. Then, they say she didn’t want to leave. For two years, they raised Bambi and toward the end of summer last year word must have gotten to the department of conservation.

When officer showed up, the Counselors said that indeed they had the baby, which they named Danny. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources said they wanted to euthanize Danny, saying she may be dangerous. But, they’ve been raising the deer since it was a fawn for two years now.

According to ABC, “on the day Danny was to be put down, Jeff and Jennifer say she escaped. I was devastated. You know, I had spent a year and several months getting her to the point where she was into adulthood and was going to be able to survive on her own”.

The Councellers were charged with unlawful possession of a deer and could face up to 60 days in jail. And a total of $2,000 in fines.

At this point, it is believed that Danny is in the wild and free. Apparently, Indiana Department of Natural Resources can't comment on pending litigation.

If charges aren't dropped a jury will decide if the couple did  or if they broke the law
