When David Fincher’s Gone Girl became an overnight critical and box office sensation, you just know that everyone involved in Dark Places did a little dance when no one was looking. When they started production on the film adaptation of the Gillian Flynn novel of the same name, they were just making a thriller. Now, they’ve made the second movie based on a book by the woman who wrote Gone Girl. And yes, that book gets name-dropped in the first Dark Places trailer. Because why not ride that wave?

This is an international trailer and all of the expository text is in French, but the visuals tell you everything you need to know. Charlize Theron plays a woman who survived the brutal massacre of her family 30 years earlier. Her brother went to prison for murder. She became a celebrity overnight. Now, down on her luck and out of options, she comes in contact with a group of real life mystery lovers who love solving real murders, forcing her to confront what really happened when her family was killed. An impressive line-up of actors, including Nicholas Hoult, Corey Stoll, Chloe Moretz and Christina Hendricks show up along the way.

Although the visuals don’t seem to have that David Fincher flair, the content is all Flynn. A gorgeous blonde finds herself in the middle of a morally sticky situation where nothing is as it seems and everyone is a little guilty? Yeah, we’re down for that.

Dark Places doesn’t have a North American release date yet, but it’s opening in Europe this Summer. Considering the success of Gone Girl, American theaters are definitely going to get this thing. It’s just a question of when. Maybe during the same weekend that Gone Girl was released on last year? If it worked before...
