Remember Davy Jones With These Wonderful Videos
Yesterday, the world lost a pop culture icon. Davy Jones, lead singer and adorable tambourine player for the TV troublemakers and original boy band The Monkees, passed away after a sudden heart attack. Much like his Beatles counterparts, this British heart throb was a teen idol and drove girls crazy around the world.
Plucked from the stage in New York after giving up his dream to be a jockey, Davy Jones was discovered by a television producer who knew of a show that was looking for a guy like him. The cherub-faced British youth was the exotic touch The Monkees would need to round out the cast and make them all stars. The rest is history.

‘Monkees’ Theme Song
Even if you’re not a Monkees fan, this song evokes familiarity. We can all elephant walk with the best of them because of this opening sequence. And Davy is as cute as can be throughout.
This is Davy Jones’ signature song. Generations of girls have grown up imagining he’s singing this, and just about any other song to them. Sadly, it’ll be a while before we cheer up.
On Tour in 1967
This clip of Davy performing ‘Daydream Believer’ in front of thousands of screaming fans gives you a glimpse into just how big the very small Monkee was. Notice at the beginning how the announcer refers to him as the “world’s best looking midget.”
In the Monkees movie ‘Head’
In 1968, The Monkees followed The Beatles’ lead and tried their hands at filmmaking. Davy Jones and the rest of the Monkees share a writing credit with Jack Nicholson and director Bob Rafelson (‘Five Easy Pieces’) on the 1968 movie ‘Head.’ In this scene, Davy meets Frank Zappa, and it’s just as weird as you’d imagine.
On Rowan & Martin’s ‘Laugh In’
The Monkees made a hilarious appearance on ‘Rowan & Martin’s Laugh In’ during the height of their popularity. This is just one of many ridiculous scenes with Davy.
On ‘The Brady Bunch’
Through the magic of reruns, any child of the ’80s ’90s can recall the time Davy Jones showed up on ‘The Brady Bunch’ and made Marcia’s day by taking her to her school’s prom and performing for her friends. She was ecstatic and we were jealous.
In ‘The Brady Bunch Movie’
Davy later mockingly reprised his role in the spooftastic ‘The Brady Bunch Movie’ and, looking as good as ever, rolled out his Brady Bunch classic ‘Girl.’
On “My Two Dads’
The most affable Monkee continued to make appearances long after the shine of his popular ’60s show had worn off. Audiences could never get enough. Here’s Davy on an episode of the ’80s sitcom ‘My Two Dads.’
Davy Jones’ Last Performance
The Monkees (sans Michael Nesmith) went on a small reunion tour in 2011. Here is Davy’s last performance in June with the band that made him a legend.
Breaking hearts again. We’ll miss you, Davy Jones.
