It might seem counterintuitive -- especially when we live in such a cold climate -- but it turns out you're making your kids less safe when you secure them in a car seat while wearing a winter coat.

The American Academy of Pediatrics points out that harnesses on child safety seats may not be able to be tightened enough to properly to secure a child, in the case of a crash.

HealthyChildren.org says, "In a car crash, fluffy padding immediately flattens out from the force, leaving extra space under the harness. A child can then slip through the straps and be thrown from the seat."

The AAP suggests dressing your child in layers, making sure the child has proper mittens, boots, and hat. After you secure the child in the car seat, then you can use a blanket on top for extra warmth.
