Dolly Parton, Katy Perry Perform ‘Jolene,’ ‘9 to 5′ and More at 2016 ACM Awards
The performance started off with "Coat of Many Colors." Parton, who sported (appropriately) a sparkly, rainbow-hued coat, took the lead, as Perry -- wearing a hot pink dress, fishnets and sparkly pink-and-yellow cowboy boots -- added feathery vocal shading as backdrop.
Perry then started into "Jolene," singing the classic song to Parton, before the band kicked in and the women traded vocal lines. The pair played up the uneasy tone of the song, making it even more of a warning to a woman trying to steal Parton's man; in fact, she even called the titular woman a "shameless hussy."
As brightly colored clocks spun on a big screen behind them, Perry and Parton naturally broke into the feminist anthem "9 to 5." Kacey Musgraves and Alyvia Alyn Lind, who played young Parton in Coat of Many Colors, boogied down in the crowd, matching the kicky, sassy marching the duo was doing onstage.
At the end of the performance, Perry bent down on her knees in an "I'm not worthy!" pose to Parton -- a worthy nod to both her musical influence and indomitable spirit.
