Elf On The Shelf — A New Christmas Tradition? [PICTURES]

Here's a Christmas tradition I have apparently been missing.  Elf On A Shelf.  My Facebook page is littered with pics of the elf around their house.

When did this become a "thing"?  Is it new?  Why am I in the dark on it?
