The first case of the Zika virus in Western New York has been confirmed.

On Sunday, Erie County Health Commissioner Dr. Gale Burstein gave minor details of the case.

According to our friends at WGRZ:

"a person was diagnosed with a Zika infection on Wednesday and has been treated and recovered from the illness. The person infected had traveled to El Salvador within the past four weeks.

Burstein says the types of mosquitos known to carry the virus are not in Western New York, but they are as close as New York City and southern parts of the state."
