I finally figured it out! A little late for Dyngus Day, but thanks to Sister Josanne Buszek of St. Stan's Church on the east side of Buffalo, she helped us out about some of the tales and traditions of pussy willows and squirt guns on Dyngus Day.

So, why are pussy willows and squirt guns used for Dyngus Day?

Well in traditional Dyngus Day in Poland, squirt guns were not used. Instead buckets of water were thrown on girls – the water was a symbol of the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist. As for the pussy willow? It represents a reminder of Jesus had to go through prior to crucifixion.

At 2:10 it's my favorite when Sister Josanne HAS to figure out how many girls Paul whacked with pussy willows!
