A heat advisory is in effect until 8 p.m. tonight for northern Erie, Niagara, Orleans and Genesee counties.

The heat index is expected to be as high as 104 degrees!

You should drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun and check in with your relatives and neighbors, especially the elderly and pets. And NEVER LEAVE CHILDREN, PETS IN THE CAR! The inside temperature of the car can quickly reach 120 degrees.

Here are some helpful tips from the Red Cross:

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol.

Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun's rays.

Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.

Postpone outdoor games and activities.
