The Environmental Working Group released their 2018 report on sunscreen safety, which found "66 percent of the 650 sunscreens it examined were harmful or ineffective," as reported by WGRZ.

You can view the report to see where your brand of sunscreen ranks, and even search for ratings for specific brands.

EWG determines its ratings based on five criteria:

  1. Health hazards (which includes potentially harmful ingredients)
  2. UVB protection
  3. UVA protection
  4. The ratio of UVA absorbance to SPF
  5. How long-lasting the sunscreen is

The ratings are given on a 1-10 scale, with 1 being the most safe and 10 the most dangerous.
