How To Know If A Charity Is A Scam
A new survey says America is the second most charitable country in the world this year, second only by the people of Myanmar.
Obviously charities raise a LOT of their money at this time of year.
Unfortunately it's also open season for SCAMMERS!
If you get a call from a charity you don't recognize, here are five things to look for that serve as red flags that they may be a scam:
- They offer very vague information about what they do and where your money's going.
- They can't prove your donation will be tax-deductible.
- Their name is a lot like a well-known organization, but just slightly different (IE instead of the World Wildlife Fund, they're the "Worldwide Wildlife Fund"...Just something we made up, but you get the point.
- They thank you for your previous donation, that you don't remember making. Don't just take their word for it and assume you forgot.
- They try REALLY hard to get you to donate that MINUTE.
If you're ever in doubt, check out these sites. If it's a REAL, legit charity, it should be listed on at least one of them:
