Jonathan Groff to Lead Fincher and Charlize Theron’s Netflix ‘Mindhunter’

HBO’s loss was Netflix’s gain, or  rather re-gain, as former House of Cards director David Fincher previously set his streaming return with Charlize Theron’s Mindhunter. Now, Looking and Glee alum Jonathan Groff has booked the lead role, with Fincher set to direct the pilot.

TVLine first reported the news, though Netflix has yet to confirm or comment outright. The series is adapted from John Douglas and Mark Olshanker’s 1996 book Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit, which Theron herself held the rights to, developing an adaptation over the last four years.

The Road scribe Joe Penhall will write the script, with Fincher and Theron on board to executive produce, and Fincher to direct. The book itself follows Douglas’ decades developing criminal profiling techniques and tracking down serial killers for the FBI. No word yet on who else might star, or if Theron herself might have any acting involvement.

Netflix isn’t slowing down its slate of original programming anytime soon, but after Groff, how should Fincher and Theron proceed with the (terribly-named) Mindhunter?
