Up until now, the cast of Dwayne Johnson’s new Jumanji movie (which he says is a sequel, not a reboot) has been dominated entirely by men, so today’s casting update is a fairly refreshing one. If you were concerned that Jumanji might just star a bunch of dudes (charming dudes, but still), you can stop worrying because Karen Gillan is officially the first woman to join the cast.

Deadline reports that Gillan has landed a major lead role opposite Johnson in the new Jumanji sequel. Details are scarce, but we know that the Guardians of the Galaxy star will play a character named Martha (somewhere, Zack Snyder is shouting, “Too soon!”) and that her role is a rather crucial one. Gillan joins a cast that also includes Jack Black, Johnson’s Central Intelligence co-star Kevin Hart and Nick Jonas — that’s a pretty charismatic bunch. And Gillan’s charming comedic gifts should make her a great foil for The Rock.

Gillan recently wrapped filming on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, in which she reprises the role of Nebula, the genetically-modified sister of Zoe Saldana’s Gamora. She can be seen next opposite Emma Watson and Tom Hanks in James Ponsoldt’s upcoming thriller The Circle, and with Ethan Hawke in In a Valley of Violence, a new western from The Sacrament director Ti West.

Jake Kasdan (Orange County) is directing the Jumanji sequel from a script by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner. The film is currently set to hit theaters on July 28, 2017.
