I made a big tray of these for our friend Piper's last day at Townsquare Media (our Chief Engineer's guide dog...see the farewell video here) before he retires.  They were quite well-received not only by him, but also by my own DJ The Wonder Dog. (And yes, I DID try them...they're not bad!!)

I had the recipe from a while ago and frankly don't recall where I found it, but in case you'd like to try them out for your pup, here's what you need:

  • 1 3/4 c whole wheat flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 c skim milk
  • 1/2 c no sugar added peanut butter (low or no sodium too!)***
  • 1/4 c honey
  • 1/4 c vegetable (or peanut) oil
  • 2 eggs
  • (optional) mini dog biscuits for the top!

NOTE:  PLEASE BE SURE YOUR DOG DOES NOT HAVE ALLERGIES TO ANY OF THESE INGREDIENTS!

***DO NOT USE ANYTHING WITH XYLITOL OR ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS. It is LETHAL for dogs! (Thank you, Lisa from Derby, for the reminder!!!)

Preheat oven to 350, and line cupcake pan with papers (makes about 12 cupcakes, or 24 mini's).  Mix all the ingredients together and spoon into each cup, about 3/4 of the way full (they will rise).  Place a biscuit on top of each but do not submerge them...just press them in until they stick.

Bake 18-20 min for regular size, 10-12 min for mini's.  Be sure to remove the paper lining before you give it to your pooch!
