The child's mom says she had tried everything to get him to stop, but nothing worked. So she tried a different tactic -- one that one of her neighbors was not in favor of, so he called the police.

I don't really see a problem with it. The child was in his own yard, out of harm's way, and mom was supervising.

Sometimes I think parents are too easy on kids and let them get away with everything. Not sure I would go to this extreme with my kids, but I'm gonna guess that he will think twice about stealing again. Better to have him learn now than in prison.
