Dave was talking with his son Avry, who is a 7th grader at Sweet Home Middle school, about the upcoming planned National School Walkout Day that is supposed to take place on March 14th. Here are the Top 5 things you need to know about the planned walkout.

1. The National School Walkout is a protest taking place in hundreds of locations and is part of a greater movement spurred by student survivors of the Parkland, Florida, school shooting asking for stricter gun laws.

2. Not all schools are participating in the walkout. If your child wants to take part in the event, you should contact your school administrators and make sure they are aware of your child's plan. Be aware that according to the ACLU, schools have the right to punish students who do the walk-out the same way they would if students miss class.

3. The walk is planned for 10 am EST.  The National School Walkout will last 17 minutes to honor the 17 students and staff members killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Valentine’s Day.

4. Worried about the impact on your student's record for college? The USA Today explained that "More than 250 colleges have released statements saying disciplinary action because of responsible participation in peaceful protests will not hurt admission to their institution, as cited by lists compiled by teachers and students."

5. This is meant to be a peaceful protest. If students become violent, they could face harsher consequences from the school and authorities.
