For those of you itching to get a follow-up to Nicki Minaj’s 2014 album The Pinkprint, be prepared to wait a while.

It’s true that Minaj is currently laser-focused on developing an upcoming television show based on her life, but it goes beyond that: She’s in a different place, emotionally, than she was while writing The Pinkprint, and she wants her new material to showcase that shift.

“I needed time to hear myself think again,” she says in a new cover story with Nylon, “because where I left off with The Pinkprint was a little bit emotionally unstable. I wanted to take a moment to just live my life, enjoy my life, have fun, go out. I think that’s very important before you start writing again. It’s a spiritual experience for the people who are hearing the music, so I’m trying to be very careful of what mental space I’m in while I’m creating it. Now, I want my happiness to be reflected in the new stuff.”

Part of that newfound happiness comes from her relationship with fellow rapper Meek Mill, who, by the way, she’s not engaged to just yet.

“I’m not engaged yet. He said that my third ring would be my engagement ring. But sometimes he called me his fiancee, and I’m always trying to stop him, like, ‘Nope! I ain’t got that third ring yet!’" she says. “We’re just taking it one step at a time. And, you know, if that happens, if I get married, then I’ll have a child, and that’ll be fun because I can’t wait to hold my baby."

She continues, offering some insight into why she and Mill work well together as a couple.

“When he and I were just friends, he would always say, ‘You remind me of my mother, and I like that because you’re like a dude. you’re tough like a guy and you talk like a dude.’ So I always to the sense that me being tough and bossy was a turn-on for him," Minaj says. "And it’s important for me to keep my voice. Being in a relationship shouldn’t mean that you lose your voice. Being in a relationship should mean that you’ve met a secure-enough man to allow you, in a sense, to remain a queen."

In any case, it'll likely be a while before Minaj releases new music, as she's focused on her acting career.

"Musically, I feel very fulfilled, and now I can start tapping into my acting world, where it’s about passion and not about the money," she says. "It’s wanting to be what I set out to be when I was in high school: an actress."
