New York State will soon require all students in the grades 7-12 to get a meningitis vaccination.

More than 20 states across the country already require the vaccine, and this mandate is just one of several new laws signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo this week.

Several public health advocates support the push for the mandate, and research shows that more than 1,000 people contract the disease every year in the United States. Of those 1,000 people, 10-to-15-percent die from the disease, and survivors often suffer from hearing loss and/or the amputation of a limb.
