The war on drugs in Western New York will soon be at the forefront of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.

Senior Senator Chuck Schumer announced that he is pushing for a new federal law that would make it easier for authorities to investigate and prosecute international drug traffickers.

The goal is to cut down on drug smuggling, especially over the border between Buffalo and Canada, and Schumer is urging the House of Representatives to pass the bill immediately.

The Western New York area has seen 147 fatal overdoses in 2015 alone.
