Sir Paul: Yoko Didn’t Do It [Directly, Anyway]

One of the biggest legends in the history of the Beatles is about to be exploded. And by no less an expert than Sir Paul McCartney.

Many, if not most fans of the legendary group have blamed Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono , for talking him into quitting the group. But now the BBC is reporting that Sir Paul told veteran talk show host Sir David Frost [apparently in England, Sirs only talk to Sirs], “She certainly didn’t break the group up.”

McCartney’s comment is part of an hour-long interview with Frost that’s scheduled to air next month on the Al Jazeera English language channel.

While Sir Paul seemed to absolve Yoko with his comments [he noted that Lennon “was definitely going to leave”], he did imply that she may have influenced him in other ways.Talking about Lennon’s signature song Imagine, McCartney said,

“When Yoko came along, part of her attraction was her avant garde side, her view of things.”

“She showed him another way to be, which was very attractive to him. So it was time for John to leave.”

This month is the 50th anniversary of the Beatles’ first British hit, Love Me Do.
