As it turns out, medical research says your mom was WRONG about a lot of stuff she said was BAD for you.

Biting your nails -- Actually helps expose your body to new germs in small numbers, so your immune system can prepare antibodies to fight them without getting sick. (Same goes for picking your nose -- and eating it.  Though if you do that, you should wear gloves for the rest of your life, because that's just gross.)

Burping -- Protects your body from getting damaged by stomach acid.  If you leave gas inside, it can loosen the muscle that separates your stomach from your esophagus so stomach acid could splash out causing heartburn. (Same goes for the OPPOSITE end of your body....)

Eating in bed -- Can help you digest food better because when you're relaxed and horizontal, your body breaks everything down completely.  If you eat when you're stressed, it interrupts your digestion. (Just make sure you -- or your kids -- don't leave dirty dishes under the bed!)

Spitting -- Gross, but it supposedly helps your breathing, especially while exercising.  When you're active, you breathe through your mouth, causing inflammation in your throat....so spitting helps to clear your breathing passages.

Now ya know.  And knowing is half the battle. ;)
