Squaw Island will officially be renamed, following much debate and complaints over the Native American name, which many saw as racist and sexist, according to ABC News.

The Island will officially be called Unity Island, following a vote Tuesday by Buffalo's Common Council.

The name, which the Niagara River parkland had for 336 years, falls in with a nationwide movement toward replacing the names of teams and sites with labels that seem offensive.

In March, Lancaster voted to change their school mascot nickname from the Redskins for similar reasons.

WGRZ reports the island was originally called Divided Island by the Senecas and was renamed Squaw Island in 1679 by men of LaSalle's expedition.
