You've probably heard of this day...but have you ever done it?

I did a little background research on today's occasion. Forbes.com even had an extensive list of the "Do's and Don'ts" for today. Who knew it would add more work? :)

Over 3.5 million American workplaces – and an estimated 37 million million people – will be bringing their kids to the office with them Thursday. (Try to watch the salty language when you get that dreaded TPS Report, okay?)

While you may have had to secure permission yesterday, it's recommended for say, your third grader, not necessarily your infant. The point of the day is to expose your children to the workplace, so show them off but be sure to teach them something in the process.

Give them a tour. Introduce them to key players.  Use this opportunity to show them the power of a handshake, the effectiveness of a "thank you", and the cool way teams work together!

According to some of my research, the day was initially created in 1993 by the Ms. Foundation for Women as "Take Your DAUGHTER to Work Day", because it was suggested that adolescent girls got less attention than boys when it came to work-world opportunities.  It was meant to increase self esteem for young girls and also to get some more one-on-one time with the parent.

It took off so quickly, boys started feeling left out when they had to go to school while the girls "took the day off".  So now, it's proven popular and valuable to both boys and girls alike!

So are there little ones at YOUR office today? What's the main message you want them to get?  Did you ever join your parent at their office when you were a kid?  Was it super cool*?

After the day is over, print this certificate out as a memoir of how awesome it was!

*Sidebar: when I was little, I went to my dad's new office.  I thought I was the cat's PJ's when I got to sit at the secretary's desk and hammer away at her typewriter, and pretended to answer the phone, all proper-like.  Then I found out there was a snack machine.  Bye-bye desk.

How some things never change. :)
