WHAT IS THUNDERSNOW?

Thundersnow is basically a thunderstorm but with snow instead of rain. It is considered a rare phenomenon.

WHAT CAUSES THUNDERSNOW?

According to the National Weather Service, Thundersnow is caused when cold air pushes warm weather up and makes it unstable.

The reason that Thundersnow is rare is that the air is usually cold both at high and low points.

Of course one of the most famous incidents of thundersnow is when Jim Cantore from the Weather Channel was caught on camera going crazy after catching thundersnow on camera.

He did give a shout-out to Western New York when he heard thundersnow happened on Monday.

A Lake Effect snow warning is in place for parts of Western New York through Wednesday morning.
